The Tallest Man On Earth - KneeJerk Review

Obligatory ironic picture post.

Right.  Caught The Tallest Man on Earth at Bowery Ballroom tonight with openers Red Cortez.  Frankly, I was disappointed from the start that he was plugged in for the set.  The atmospheric acoustics on the album are part of the appeal.  Also sad that he opened with “I Won’t Be Found”, arguably his best but definitely his most popular song.  I thought his voice sounded forced and put-on, but his guitar playing was excellent.  The fans prided themselves on out-shushing each other (also, not meaning to cause a fuss, but there seemed an extraordinary amount of lesbians in the audience?).  One dude was wayyyy too drunk for such a low-key show.  Jesus.  The guitar cord gave out in the middle of one song and led to the best part of the night, where the likeable performer had to improvise, bending the mic stand and his body over as he sat on the otherwise unused onstage chair and finished the song acoustically.  That’s how it should have been all along.  Very likeable guy, very good guitar player but the live show (as amusingly evasive as he is) leaves too much to be desired.

Red Cortez was the most generic mix of Kings of Leon/Razorlight/Courteeners, etc.  Not bad, but eh….

Just makes me all the more excited for Cymbals Eat Guitars/Beach House/The Walkmen (!!!!!) tomorrow.
