PLEASE GOD, BUY A TICKET FOR A TOURING MUSICAL aka The 2009 Tony Awards

Oh hi.  It’s the Tony Awards.  The Tony Awards, like most award shows, have gone from honoring excellence to advertising desperately for musicals touring the country.  That’s why you’ll see the touring company of Legally Blonde performing tonight (which wasn’t even nominated for a ‘Best Musical’ Tony last year) and Jersey Boys (a show that’s three years old) among the present nominees.

And, becasue we all know that straight plays are boring, they’ve disposed of those pesky “Non-singing Musicals” before the show.  Now they can bring you more (surely) embarrassing performances!

Also, because no one cares about people they don’t already know, they’ve brought in people you’re familiar with to validate the art form.

Like this guy!

And this old friend!

And our Barack Obama, NPH:

Meh, maybe it’s Hugh Jackman.  Whatever.

Here’s a suggestion: put the show on PBS in full.  Air highlights later on CBS (secret: no one watches CBS anyway).  Give the theater back some fucking dignity.  Though really, I’m not convinced there’s any dignity left.
